Vegan Diets for Toddlers
Plant-Based Complementary Foods - Provide Your Child with Essential Nutrients
Once solid foods have been introduced by the end of the first year of life, the transition to family meals - with a wide variety of ingredients - proceeds rapidly. This makes it easy to ensure that all essential nutrients are provided.
It is now widely recognized that dishes without animal-based ingredients - such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, or other dairy products - are a sensible addition to the diet of young children (and adults as well). Plant-based meals are a genuine and valuable alternative for bringing variety and diversity to the table. By carefully combining purely plant-based protein sources such as grains, legumes and potatoes, you can create a nutrient-rich meal appropriate for the child’s age.
This does not mean that we should completely eliminate all animal-based foods from our diet. These foods still have their place - completely cutting them out is neither necessary nor recommended by nutrition experts, such as those in the “Gesund ins Leben – Netzwerk Junge Familie” network. There is too much concern that the diet might be unbalanced and not age-appropriate, which could result in the youngest children not receiving adequate nutrition.
If you nevertheless make a conscious decision to follow a purely plant-based or vegan diet for your child, be sure to follow the recommendations of experts such as the “Netzwerk Junge Familie” and supplement their diet with vitamin B12.
Proactive planning is key here:
- Talk to your pediatrician
- Schedule regular checkups with your pediatrician
- Seek expert and practical guidance from a certified nutritionist.
This is because, in addition to vitamin B12, other minerals and vitamins - such as zinc, iron, calcium, selenium, vitamin D, iodine, and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) - can also be critical at this age.
Plant-based foods are important for a balanced diet
German professional associations¹⁻² recommend a varied diet rich in plant-based foods and moderate amounts of animal-based foods. Babies and toddlers, in particular, need many important nutrients from all types of foods for their growth and development. It is crucial that the majority of our children’s diet consist of vegetables, fruits, legumes, potatoes, and grains - just as the food pyramid recommends. You can find more information on this here.
